Air Abrasion/No Drill

With Biomimetic Dentistry, there often is less drilling.  So, when there is a cavity or a restoration, how do we prepare the area of the tooth without drilling?  We use air abrasion.

Air abrasion is a gentle spray of an air-and-powder mix that removes tooth decay.  By controlling the speed and the intensity of both the powder and the air, the procedure is virtually painless.  In most cases when Dr. Rogers uses air abrasion, the patient does not require an anesthetic shot.

No drilling, no shot, no numb or droopy lips from the anesthetic.  Biomimetic Dentistry with air abrasion is very easy on the patient.  Biomimetic Dentistry offers a no needle, no drill, no fear procedure for removing decay.  That is why Biomimetic Dentistry is so perfect for children.  Most cavities that are detected can be treated immediately, without a drill and without a needle.

Until just recently, dentists had only one choice to prepare a tooth for a filling or restoration:  the drill.  Unfortunately, drills remove a lot of healthy tooth structure, leading to cracks and breaks that often lead to root canals and crowns.  Since air abrasion is achieved by directing a thin stream of abrasive powder at the area of tooth decay, Dr. Rogers removes only minimal sections of tooth – only the decayed area.

Long term, a tooth treated with biomimetic dentistry lasts longer because it is more fully intact after the filling or restoration.  Once Air Abrasion removes the decay, we will fill that cavity with a nearly invisible, non-mercury filling, making the entire tooth strong, long lasting and resistant to decay.  The result is very attractive and looks like a brand new tooth.
